Hiking Details:
As a young girl my mother took my sister and I hiking fairly frequently. This particular hike stands out as one of the most spectacular. The views are magnificent. The problem being none of us remembered exactly where the hike was, nor the name. We just remembered views and a fire lookout station on top. After years of searching (half heartedly as I lived about 6 hours away at the time) we are certain that Chilco is in fact the hike from our memories.
Once you’ve arrived at the trailhead you’ll follow an old logging road up the hillside. This trail is often steep and you’ll wind your way up via switchbacks. Depending on the season the hillside is overflowing with ripe huckleberries and as expected, people happily harvesting these tasty treats.

There are a few campsites close to the top that offer lovely views if you desire. There is a split in the trail that’s clearly marked. Stick to the left for North Chilco. Soon after you will exit the cover of trees to the final short ascent.

At the top you’ll find remnants of the old fire lookout and any way you care to look there will be views. Stay awhile and enjoy the 360 degree views. Excellent sandwich spots are plentiful. For your return retrace your steps, to lengthen the experience you can always return to the trail split and hike more.
